Elita One Mouse Pad

Back in May we had a look at the two first wrist-rest mouse pads made with a Transformers theme, those being modeled after Acree and Windblade respectively.

Most people, whether they liked them or were horrified by them, were none the less fascinated and speculated whether there would be any more. Now a few months later we have our answer. Another femmebot has let her form grace the pad so that Transfans and netnerds everywhere can click away without thier poor wrists getting sore, that femmebot being Elita One.

Elita One is looking just as buxom as her femmebot comrades here. Once again we have the soft silicone at the bottom that feels quite smooth to the touch and the top gives you plenty of room to manuver your mouse around when you are looking up websites about, er, morality and self-denial.

I actually do really like the artwork here. There hasn’t been a massive amount of artwork of Elita One. She has been in IDW for the past couple of years as a warrior space captain, often depicted with her damaged helmet and sitting upon her throne made up of the skeletal remains of the previous ships leaders. Even without the ‘wrist rest’ parts this is a far softer depiction of her and a nice change of pace.

But of course all the rationalization in the world wont get you away from the fact that this is a booby-pad – designed to appeal to a combination of Transfan and Mazophiliac. Once again, you can leave it in the packaging so that you can hang it on the walls to impress your friends and family if you wish.

Competition Time!

When the first two of these mouse pads appeared online a lot of people speculated which character would come next, the majority believing it would be Beast Wars Blackarachnia, especially given her comic art from her Legends toy. But since we got Elita One instead we are back to wondering – who will be next?

Moving your Transformers Collection – Part 2: The actual Move

In Part 1 of Moving your Transformers Collection we looked at packing your Transformer collection safely in order to get it ready to move to its new home. In part two we are going to look at the moving itself. What method you use will depend on whether you are moving yourself or having movers do it for you.

If Hiring Movers

*The sign may be battered, but at least your toys wont be.*

Ensure you mark all pertinent boxes with FRAGILE. Even in plastic crates if something of sufficient weight is put on top the lid can break. Don’t think that most 30 year old G1 toys can take the strain of the weight of a couch sitting on them – not even Brawn. Also have marked on the outside of the box which particular Transformers are in there in order for easier sorting when they reach their destination.
Make sure all the boxes are taped up at the top to prevent lids coming off or cardboard boxes opening when being lugged by removalists.
Word up your removalists about your collection. Most movers are younger blokes so are well aware what Transformers are. I worded up mine when moving from Melbourne to Swan Hill and unbidden they did a visual sweep of the truck before leaving after unpacking. Because of this I ended up not losing one of my Leader-Class Movie Brawl’s shoulder cannons that had managed to fall out of a crate. I was very grateful for this unasked for courtesy.

If Moving Yourself

*Where is Motormaster when you need him?*

This is where I am for the current move. Moving a thousand kilometers with a whole hobby farm to pack up on top of my 3000+ TF item collection means we are using a 40 foot shipping container which we pack ourselves. As such you need to know how to stack your TF boxes. I use the following method:
Furniture and heavy boxes (such as full of books) make up the bottom half of the layers
Strong Transformer Crates (such as plastic ones) make up the first upper layer
Weaker Transformer boxes (such as cardboard ones) make up the second upper layer
Light items that cannot damage anything underneath make up the top layer
Make sure all Transformer crates and boxes are secure. Your ratchet straps will be more useful affixing large pieces of furniture to the wall so this can be achieved by simply wedging the boxes tight enough against each other that movement is all but impossible but at the same time they are not crushing each other.
When unpacking at the other end, do several visual sweeps of the truck or shipping container to see if any items have fallen out.

Keep a Record of your Collection

If you have a large enough collection, you might not notice until it’s too late that somehow a rare and tiny Arms Micron or Decepticon Cassette got left behind. To try and remedy this do a thorough check at both ends that all your pieces are present and correct. However if even this is too time consuming at least have a complete list of your action figures so that you can make an insurance claim. I do this in two ways:

1: A typed list. How you do this is up to you. I’d recommend an Excel Spreadsheet, though I personally just have a bloated Microsoft Word file, since when I started my cataloging many, many figures years and years ago I didn’t know how to use that program and it’s a bit late in the game to swap over.
2: An online visual record. Having a typed list is all well and good, but what happens if your computer goes missing during the move, or the whole truck crashes and burns? How will you make an insurance claim then? By having a visual record kept online somewhere, it not only helps to remind you what is in your collection, but prove to an insurance company what you had should anything go wrong. I use Photobucket and also have extensive albums on Facebook for this purpose.

By following the advice given in part one regarding sorting and packing along with the advice imparted above regarding the actual move, you stand a damn good chance of getting all your Autobuddies and Deceptipals to their destination without a single bot getting lost or damaged. It may never be a stress-free experience (moving never is) but at least you won’t lie awake at night wondering if Springer’s Sword is lying on a roadside somewhere. Good luck!

Moving your Transformers Collection – Part 1: Sorting & Packing

Packing and moving. Truly a terrible job. Having to pack up the entire contents of a house and get them to a secondary desitnation safely is time consuming, back breaking and frankly boring. But you can add to that list a hefty amount of stress if you have something like an expensive collection you have to move.

When I moved out of home at 18, I was able to fit all the belongings of both my buddy and me in a small station wagon and my small box of G1 Transformers stayed at Mum’s. When I moved to the country at the age of 33, I had accumulated over 900 TF figures and had a respectable amount of comics, books and clothing to go with it, it took up a nice bit of space in the moving truck.

Now nearing 40 I am moving again and this time across states, a solid 10 hour drive from where I am now. And my collection has grown expodentially! Currently my collection boasts:

2000 figures – over 100 of them MISB/MOSC
500+ Comics
40+ Books
60+ DVDs/Blu Rays/Video Games
80+ Pieces of clothing
Lots and LOTS of MISC (cups, mugs, board games, lunch boxes, backpacks, posters etc).

So probably about 3000 pieces all up.

Moving all this is very daunting. Not only the sheer scope of packing it all in the first place, but packing it all in such a way that nothing will get lost or broken. In this two part blog I will be sharing my tips for how to move your collection in such a way that it stays safe. And thus we will start with Part 1: Packing.

Step 1: Sorting

Sorting action figures

To make sure you leave nothing behind I strongly suggest you sort your collection. How you do this is up to you. You may choose to sort via the toyline (G1, Beast Wars, Armada, Movieverse etc) but personally as a Multiverse collector I choose to go by the individual character. This has the advantage of being able to bag them to keep them grouped whereas an entire toyline , especially ones that have big figures like Cybertron, might be too big for a single crate. Also if your collection is smaller you might take the time to transform them all into vehicle modes to be more compact, though this was something time precluded me from doing.

In cases where you have a lot of characters you might even give them their own crate. I have these for Optimus, Bumblebee, Starscream, Megatron etc. With my Optimus I needed two huge crates, one for loose figures and one for MISB’s.

Sorting Paperwork

I have to give my wife credit for this one. Very occasionally I get stuck with a TF that I haven’t transformed in many years and have forgotten how. When this happens rather than dig through over 1000 instruction manuals I turn to youtube. However where we are moving we wont have internet for quite a while so my wife sorted all my instruction manuals into 26 individual alphabetical plastic pockets. This was also handy for checking I was not missing any accessories.

Primarily you want to have them bagged with the figure they come with. However if you have thousands of the buggers time may stop you from doing this. In that case I recommend sorting them into bags of missiles, rifles, shields etc. I’d also bag all your smaller figures like Kre-O in a similar fashion.

Step 2: Packing

As I’ve shown above, large plastic sealable bags are the go for keeping your robots separate. But now the larger packing begins. For this you will mainly use three different materials: cardboard boxes, cardboard tubes and plastic crates.

Cardboard boxes

*The TF boxes that other TF boxes come in*

In these you can pack items that are not breakable. This includes TF boxes you have kept (such as perhaps Unite Warriors or from busts) and Transformers clothing. Other misc items such as backpacks, lunch boxes etc can be packed the same way.

Cardboard tubes

Used for all your Transformer posters.

Plastic Packing crates.

*Expensive when you need a lot but worth it*

Now these are really what you need for your figures. The stronger construction will protect the figures from getting damaged and you can buy them up to a 140L size for around $20 each from places like The Reject Shop. When packing these crates, try and pack them with similar toys. I have all my versions of the Combaticon and Stunticon characters in one crate, all my versions of the 84’ Autobot cars in another and so on.

Bubble Wrap

*Resist the urge to pop – you wont be able to stop!*

If you wanna go the extra mile and pad all your plastic crates with bubble wrap on the inside it’s a good idea. However if you have a collection as big as mine its probably impractical and I would suggest just bubble wrapping any of your irriplacable or particularly fragile items.

So, by following the above you should be able to get your collection, no matter how large or small, ready to move to its new home. Please check back for part two – The Move!

Toys Review – Combiner Force: Blurr, Windblade & Soundwave

The Robots in Disguise(15) toyline continues, despite being wound down somewhat to accommodate shelf space in shops for the upcoming TF5 toys. Today we will be looking at the latest wave which oddly does not involve semi-creature modes in any form. No, this wave consists of new versions of much loved (in two cases anyway) classic characters. Despite being part of the Combiner Force subline these figures do not combine, but rather try to seduce you with a mixture of new alt-modes and nostalgia. So let’s take a look at the Warrior-class Robots in Disguise: Combiner Force Blurr, Windblade and Soundwave.

Blurr – Robot Mode

Seems to be a nice amalgamation of Blurr’s look from Rescue Bots (which RID does do crossover episodes with) with the look he has been sporting in the Generations line. He has the more rounded head with the large goggles that he has in the RB cartoon/toyline but the lighter colours and high shoulder pads one associates with Generations/G1 Blurr. The proportions are quite nice and he is able to be posed in a number of positions due to the ankle, knee, elbow and shoulder joints. The head is quite maneuverable too, tilting in pretty much any angle you desire. Being from RID instead of RB, this Blurr is now sporting a blaster as well.

Blurr – Vehicle Mode

Almost a cross between the first and second Generations Blurr toys. Most definitely a stylized Earth vehicle however with the distinctive pointiness that the latest Titans Return version has. Quite a sexy futuristic sportscar with its spoiler, big wheels and dome. The blaster can be put on either side of the vehicle or on top, giving you different battle options when at play.

Windblade – Robot Mode

*My mask hides my pain. Well… actually it hides what is otherwise a cool face design.*

Windblade is sporting here her battle mask and due to her having such a distinctive face it is a shame it cannot be removed, detracting somewhat from the figure overall. A nice touch I found was the different options you have with the sword and sheath. You can either have her holding her sword with the sheath on her hip (as pictured) or the sheath can act as a giant second sword. Also the sheath splits in two so you can have half on each hip if that is the look you like. The way her wings affix to her body looks far superior to the Generations version with which she shares the more lithe arms with. If it wasn’t for the head, overall I would say this is actually superior to the Generations version but as it is that one will have to go to the judges.

Windblade – Vehicle Mode

*Do VTOL turbines still work if you cover them?*

What is disappointing is that her wind turbines are covered by caps on the top in her VTOL jet mode. With the Generations version you could actually blow on the turbines and make them spin, here they are not even visible in her vehicle mode. It’s not a badly proportioned jet and is very indicative of the screen character. Her sword sheath can be affixed underneath but I only recommend this as a way to not lose the piece – otherwise it looks simply terrible and certainly ruins the aerodynamic look of the jet which is somewhat already hampered by the way the robot arms jut out from the sides, much like many of the Combiner Wars figures.

Soundwave – Robot Mode

Like Blurr being an amalgamation of RB and Generations Blurr figures, this Soundwave seems to be an amalgamation of the TFPrime and Fall of Cybertron Soundwave toys. The head sculpt is most definitely a carry over from TFPRime (the precursor cartoon to the current RID series) and the proportions are very in line with most of the other RID figures. However with the added shoulder cannon, distinctive chest and bulkier limbs he is certainly as shout out to the Soundwave figures of old. The light piping in the back of the head can make for some good effects and the shoulder cannon can be removed to be used as a handgun.

Soundwave – Vehicle Mode

This is where the toy really calls out to the Fall of Cybertron figure. Ruby translucent wheels along with a roof cannon and a bulky blue Cybertronian-armored car is the flavor here and the flavor is good! He has a more distinctive cockpit which is a definite plus, but the peg that holds the roof cannon in is way too long, it makes it look ungainly sitting on top. Despite this I couldn’t bring myself to remove it as it seems intrinsic to an otherwise odd alt-mode. This peg flaw is made up for somewhat by the fact that the cannon can not only be swiveled 360 degrees but also be tilted up and down.

Overall

Well I’d say Blurr is a definite must-grab if you like the character and fits in well with the other multiverse versions of him. Windblade has her pros and cons and it will really be decided on whether you like the character and whether you already have the previous RID version of her. Soundwave… well… it’s damn hard to pass up a new Soundwave figure! However there is another SW RID figure on the horizon which, whilst looking inferior, will come with Laserbeak so it may be worth waiting for that toy to be released and then compare before making your purchase.

Video: Trev wins $500 answering Transformers questions!

Being a dedicated JJJ listener I didn’t listen to Fox FM back when I lived in Melbourne. But my girlfriend (now wife) did and on their morning show in 2006 they had a competition called Fan-Tastic! Essentially you sent in an email discussing what you were a rabid fan of and if you sounded interesting you would get a follow-up call. If that went well they would ring you one morning for a short interview about your obsession then ask you 3 questions on the subject. Each time you answered correctly and the money went up with the option to take the money at any time – the max you could win was $500.

Well at my girlfriends suggestion I did indeed email them discussing my love of The Transformers. I received the follow up call – not knowing that I was not on air I tried to be as amusing as possible. This got me on air the following week and… well, best you watch the video and listen for yourself what happened eh!

Transformers Wrist Rest Mouse Pads

Well…. hmmmm. What to say here.

Wrist Rest Mouse Pads are all the rage these days. With more and more of us stuck in front of a computer at work or home for hours on end, the wrist can get sore. The whole idea of these kind of mouse pads is that they are filled with a squishy gel and are designed to be smooth and comforting to your wrist.

Then someone had the idea “Hey, since we are making a gel filled mat anyway, why don’t we shape the gel sacks like boobs?!”

And thus an industry was born. An industry I was blissfully unaware of until a few weeks ago. I had been using the same mouse pad for about 10 years (a Bumblebee one from the 2007 movie) which had disintegrated and I had never replaced. So while idly surfing ebay I typed in Transformer Mouse Pads.

That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

Apparently these type of mouse pads are very prevalent. Name nearly any cartoon or video game coming out of Japan which features cute anime girls and someone has made a ~~boobpad~~ wrist rest of them. Oh, and not just the boobs – you can get butt ones too! So whether you want to rest your weary wrist on Nami’s ample chest or Chun-Li’s ample bum there is a product for you. So I guess it was just a matter of time before they made Transformer ones.

So lets have a look at the two shall we:

The mouse pads themselves are quite large. However even larger are the ~~boobs~~ wrist rests. I knew they would be bumpy when ordering them but I didn’t think they would be this… er… prominent. If they were human these femmebots would be rockin’ serious F cups (and probably have serious back issues). Since a Transformer is usually at least 10 times the size of a human I think we would have to expand the alphabet to give these ones a proper designation. The characters are Arcee and Windblade, both quite prominent in the IDW comics at the moment and both have had Generations toys in recent years. Admittedly the toys themselves do have chests that stick forward in a female manner, but they are certainly not this abundantly female!

The material feels… quite um… smooth. And the bumps feel…. quite er…. squishy. Oh shit – what am I supposed to say here? These are Transformer Boob Mouse Pads, there is no getting around it! Rest your wrist on it (and only your wrist boys) and click yourself silly! Of course you can always leave them in their packaging and hang them on the wall as a talking piece when friends and relatives come to visit.

Somehow I think mine are going to live in a box to be taken out to amuse my mates when they come over for a beer. With two little kids in the house I can’t see my wife allowing otherwise and I definitely cant take them to work.

Look, one could easily make the argument that these objectify… er… giant transforming alien femmebots (hmmm… maybe its not so easy after all) but in the end it’s a bit of silly, inexpensive fun that is more likely to illicit a dirty chuckle from your friends than any real arousal from yourself. So have a good laugh that these kinds of things have been even created in the first place and click ya brains out!

Ah the toys of yesteryear! Enjoy these classic reviews of toys gone by!

I’m not a fan of most ‘monster’ Transformers, but I grabbed Skylynx as it was the only figure at the time that paid homage to our favorite arrogant space shutte. Yes I know this Skylynx doesn’t have the space shuttle mode, but it was the beast mode I was after.

Robot mode

Butt-ugly! Also, the discs in his wings make him top heavy and I had really muck about with him to get him to stand properly.

Beast mode

Still pretty butt-ugly, but its for the beast mode I got him so its in this mode he will likely remain. A quadraped dragon-bird thing coloured in red, white & blue was what was on offer, and it’s what they delivered .

Overall

Is he worth getting? It’s an easy transformation which makes him good for kids and for the adults, well, personally I’m a sucker for a G1 homage (even if G1 Sky Lynx would be horrified that he is now a ‘grubby Predacon!’ ) so that’s why I got him. To be honest otherwise I think this toy would be easy to pass up, especially since he had such a limited release and the Combiner Wars version is now on offer. Speaking of which…

Robot Mode

A nice looking Sky Lynx indeed. While the poseability isn’t great nearly every part of him can be re-positioned to some extent (wings, tail, legs, feet, neck, mouth) so you can give him different looks. Blasters can be attached to the wings or to elongate the tail.

Space Shuttle Mode

Besides the undercarriage sticking out from under the back of the Space Shuttle good and it’s very faithful to the original Sky Lynx concept in terms of proportions, colour scheme and shape. Very nice. Blasters can once again be attached to the wings.

Transformation
Very straight forward for a Voyager and one of the easiest of that size from the CW line to do.
Overall
This is a pretty good Sky Lynx. I think it could have benefited from being a Leader Class toy with the Lynx mode built in rather than it being a combiner but certainly the fact he combines with others toys (see HERE) and has the Lynx as the head gives it extra playability for younger fans and is an extra nod to fans of the original toy. So not as cool as the G1 toy (that was even motorized!) but way cooler than the Predacons Rising version. Overall recommended.

Classic Toy Reviews – Generations and Timelines Wasp/Thrustinator

Robot Mode

*Quite good looking, faithful to both Beast Wars and the IDW incarnations. He has good articulation and the light piping works really well with his huge optics.

Wasp mode

*To my mind the wasp mode here is better than both the Beast Wars and the Animated versions of the character. Very compact, very well coloured and very well balanced. The flapping wings are a nice touch that add a lot of play value.

Transformation

This transformation would be far easier if the instructions were REMOTELY USEFUL! I was able to figure him out because, well, if I can’t after 30 years of collecting I should hand in my Autobrand right now. But I wouldn’t give this to a little kid or a novice who would try to go soely by the instructions because Waspy would be flung out the window after 10 minutes. Worth getting?
*For me, as more of a G1 than BW fan (technically the same universe I know), the only BW characters (besides the odd Robot Hero) I’ve bothered to collect over the years have been Depthcharge’s and Waspinator‘s so I was happy to grab this guy to add to the collection. I’ll be bypassing the new Rhinox & Rattrap figures altogether. But if you are a big Beast Wars fan I’d say this is the figure to get for the new year. Oh, and the free comic is a nice bonus too

They had to completely use their imaginations here since it’s never been properly on screen, but in the end I suppose it was heavily influenced by what went where from his alt-mode and Dirgegun where apparently the mold came from. Hideous but kinda interesting. I always have a soft spot for any robot that isn’t perfectly symmetrical. A cool concept is that you can retract his head and put a big missile launching stinger in it’s place, which also gives him a totally purple head which is a shout out to the cartoon.

Wasp…. thingie

Bloody hideous! But whereas in the cartoon he was just a Wasp with BM Thrusts head (which I’ve included an image of here), they’ve taken the meld to the nth degree here so well done them for putting a bit of imagination into it. Having different parts of Waspinators alt-modes body and head mutated and deformed in Thrusts colours is – while garish – a kinda cool concept. That said, it’s still the ugliest thing I’ve seen since the Fuzors.

Overall
Well, probably my least favorite in the latest subscription service figures for me as it’s a character I care little about and I very vaguely remember showing up briefly in the final episode of BM. Nevertheless, a very interesting looking figure and creatively designed toy. If you are a massive Beast Machines fan (are there any ) and not a member of the TFSS then wait till it turns up cheap on the secondary market.
